In the traditional worldview of the Chelan Tribe, it was placed on Earth before any other being, the original ancestor to whom all life owes its breath. Water is Life, the first of 16 heritage panels, honors that living philosophy and reminds us that every story of Manson, from orchards to wineries to community, exists because water allowed it to.

In the late 1800s, Henry and Lydia Schultz carried Concord grape vines from Missouri to Manson's north shore. Grapes gave way to apples for most of the century — until the 1998 market crash forced growers to rethink everything. Living-room conversations led to a bold idea: modern wine grapes. By 2009, Lake Chelan earned AVA status; today the valley boasts 40+ wineries. And those original Schultz Concord vines? Still growing behind the Lake Chelan Casino, over a century later.
